Most sore throats are caused by viruses and are part of a cold. Tonsillitis (temporary swelling and redness of the tonsils) is usually present with any throat infection, viral or bacterial. The presence of tonsillitis does not have any special meaning.
Sore throats caused by a virus usually last 3-4 days. Children with a postnasal drip from draining sinuses often have a sore throat from frequent throat clearing.
Treatment for sore throats include: Tylenol or Motrin for pain and fever relief, warm salt water gargles and a soft diet. Your child should be seen if the pain is severe, or if they are experiencing a great difficulty in swallowing, or are drooling or spitting.
